The sound of nothing happening

Why the quietest level in Salt & Static took the longest to mix.

We spent three weeks on a room in which nothing happens. It is a small relay hut on the salt flat. You open the door, the wind drops, and the radio on the table hisses at you. That is the level.

The first version felt dead, because real silence on a laptop speaker sounds like a broken game. So we layered things you do not notice: a fridge hum two rooms away, salt ticking against the window, and a tone just under the hiss that rises a little when you face the right wall.

Testers kept telling us they had found a clue by instinct. They had not. They had heard the tone without knowing. That was the best compliment we have had all year.
